Quality. Purity. Integrity. An unwavering belief in these principles inspired Albert May Todd, then a teenager, to found A. M. Todd Company in 1869. It was an era when mint essential oil from Michigan had a poor reputation thanks to widespread adulteration by unscrupulous vendors. Albert May’s initiatives brought credibility to Michigan essential oils and early success to the A. M. Todd Company, now the world’s oldest and largest supplier of American peppermint and spearmint oil.
During the last half century, A. M. Todd has grown far beyond its original mission. Today we are a global company and a natural resource for products and services used in the food industry, in botanically based therapeutics, in alternative and complementary medicines, and in personal-care products.
Between 1969 and 1990, we acquired complementary enterprises that provided our customers with premium vanilla beans from Madagascar and Indonesia; botanical extracts; customized seasoning blends; and citrus flavors and juices. During the late 1990s we sold some of those acquisitions to maintain a stronger focus on our core business. We expanded our global presence by developing farmlands and experimental plant stations in Argentina, India, and Mexico. To better serve our European customers, we established A. M. Todd – United Kingdom in England.
A. M. Todd is embracing the opportunities of the 21st century by leveraging our cross-company capabilities and becoming the essential resource for:
- innovative value-added products and services,
- design of flavor systems and functional ingredients,
- joint ventures in which A. M. Todd’s technical team of food scientists, plant scientists, chemists, biologists, and flavorists creates effective, marketable products for new and established businesses,
- investment capital through our Great Spirit Ventures subsidiary.
